Allen Iverson is an NBA superstar from Hampton. And now, Virginia Beach Police say he"s also a victim of attempted extortion. A grand jury indictment obtained by WAVY.com charges a Hampton man, Andre Steele, with attempted extortion. Virginia Beach Police say the man has known Allen Iverson for years.
But, Virginia Beach detectives say Steele(Photo) tried to score something off Iverson, by threatening him with extortion.
Police say Steele "has been an acquaintance of the Denver Nuggets star for several years."
Investigators would not go into details about the nature of the extortion, but say Steele actually called Iverson"s lawyer in Virginia Beach and made the threat through his lawyer.
"He contacted the attorney and demanded either money and/or property and said if his demand was not met he was going to do something the victim would not like."
The indictment says on Friday, January 25th Andre Steele did attempt to extort from Allen Ezail Iverson.
Steele was arrested and jailed Saturday. Hampton Police picked him up at his home in their city. And Va. Beach detectives say he was never able to score anything off the basketball star.
No one who associated with Iverson would talk about what Andre Steele claimed to have on Iverson that could be used against him.
Steele will face a judge on April 2.
